Get Involved as a Family

Your family can be a positive example for others regarding healthy relationships and great childhoods. Get involved to ensure kids in your community are safe.

  • Ask your place of worship or child’s athletic organization what steps they are taking to ensure children are safe from child predators.
  • Educate yourself and your family on child sexual abuse prevention (put the link to the Are They Good for your Kids page).
  • Minimize situations that put your family at risk of abuse or harm. Check out the Home Safety Check List (put link).
  • Talk to your children about body safety, boundaries and privacy.
  • Teach your children their rights. Teach them to they are special and have the right to be safe.

  • Obtain a free background check on nannies, babysitters or love interests watching your children when you are not around (link to background check page).
  • Participate, as a family, in the annual Lexi Memorial® 5K Run/Walk.
  • Organize the planting of a pinwheel garden in your community.
  • Understand child development, and age-appropriate behaviors.
  • Share your experiences with positively handling stress with families facing similar challenges.
  • Help your child learn healthy conflict resolution skills by teaching or modeling them.
  • Never discipline your child when you are upset. Give yourself time to calm down. Remember that discipline is a way to teach your child. Use privileges to encourage good behavior and time-outs to help your child regain control.
  • Look for opportunities to encourage and reinforce positive behavior.
  • Get involved with other parents in your community.
  • Start a playgroup.
  • Talk to members of your worship community, civic organizations and/or youth serving organizations about involvement in child abuse prevention.

  • Donate toys, books or other items to participants served by local youth and family serving organizations.
  • Donate resources to families in need – clothing, food, shelter, furnishings, job search information, toys, etc.
